Two Days in Brooklyn: September 26 and 27
The Brooklyn Book Festival runs from September 20 to September 28, 2026. Two of those days carry the weight for a small group. Saturday, September 26 brings Children's Day. Sunday, September 27 brings Festival Day and the Literary Marketplace.
This route uses those two flagships as anchors and the surrounding borough as the walking programme. Most anchor sessions carry a free listing. The route is built for ten people.
Getting Into Brooklyn Heights
Brooklyn Bridge Park lists the subway pairs that serve the waterfront. The 2 and 3 stop at Clark Street. The 4 and 5 stop at Borough Hall. The A and C stop at High Street and at Jay Street-MetroTech. The F stops at York Street. NYC Ferry runs the East River route to DUMBO and Fulton Ferry, and the South Brooklyn route to Pier 6 and DUMBO.
Take the 2 or 3 to Clark Street for the Brooklyn Heights end of the route. Take the 2, 3 or 4 to Borough Hall for the festival stages. The 5 serves Borough Hall on weekdays only, so the Sunday group travels on the 2, 3 or 4.
Saturday Morning: Children's Day
Children's Day runs from 10am to 4pm at Brooklyn Borough Hall and Plaza, 209 Joralemon Street. The schedule lists 30 sessions. Twenty-eight are free. R.J. Palacio appears with illustrator Brett Helquist at 11:30am on the Picture Book Stage. Adam Gidwitz tells fairy tales at 11am in the Borough Hall Courtroom. A group of ten moves well here. The plaza holds the crowd. Send adults into sessions in pairs and set one meeting point at the plaza for the top of each hour.
Saturday Afternoon: Montague Street and the Promenade
Montague Street runs west from Court Street to Montague Terrace at the promenade. The stretch carries the bookshops, and Books Are Magic at 122 Montague Street appears in the festival's Bookend programme.
New York City's zoning resolution protects the view west from the promenade. The protected sightline takes in the lower Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge archway, the South Street Seaport, the Whitehall Ferry Terminal, the Statue of Liberty and Governors Island.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Department of Transportation announced the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Central rehabilitation on August 24, 2026. The plan builds a temporary two-level bypass on top of Furman Street, below the promenade, from Atlantic Avenue to Columbia Heights. The city states the bypass runs no higher than the existing Queens-bound highway and will not block the promenade. Construction is scheduled to start in 2030.
Saturday Substitutions: Two Bookend Sessions
Two free Bookend events start at 3pm in Brooklyn that Saturday. Kvartira Books hosts a reading on Odesa at 731 Washington Avenue. A session on Muslim community and culture runs at 360 Court Street.
Either session takes the last hour of Children's Day. A group that keeps both books an evening session at Cafe con Libros, 724 Prospect Place, or Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton Street. Both are free.
Sunday Morning: The Poetry Train
Sunday opens with Poetry in Motion: Read and Ride at 9:30am. Riders meet on the plaza at the corner of Chambers Street and Centre Street, near the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station on the 4 and 5. The group rides into Brooklyn for the festival.
MTA Arts & Design runs the ride with the Poetry Society of America. Poetry in Motion has carried poetry into the transit system for more than 30 years. Riders receive a free anthology or bookmark set. The event costs nothing.
Sunday: Festival Day and the Marketplace
Festival Day runs from 10am to 6pm at Brooklyn Borough Hall and the surrounding venues. Eight stages carry 56 sessions. Fifty-four are free. Organisers expect 300 authors. The Literary Marketplace fills the surrounding streets with 250 publishers.
The stages sit in one Downtown Brooklyn cluster. The Main Stage stands on Borough Hall Plaza. The Center Stage stands in Columbus Park. The North Stage stands on Cadman Plaza East at Korean War Veterans Park. Brooklyn Law School opens the Moot Courtroom and the Student Lounge at 250 Joralemon Street. The Center for Brooklyn History opens at 128 Pierrepont Street. St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church opens at 157 Montague Street.
No Festival Day entry needs a ticket.
Sunday Afternoon: The DUMBO Waterfront
Walk down Montague Street to the promenade, then follow the waterfront east to DUMBO. Brooklyn Bridge Park covers the stretch from Pier 1 south to Pier 6. The park opens 7 days a week from 6am to 1am and charges no entry fee.
Fulton Ferry Landing sits at the foot of Old Fulton Street. The pier carries views of the Brooklyn Bridge, New York Harbor and the Lower Manhattan skyline. Its railings carry Walt Whitman's Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. Luke's Lobster and Bread's Bakery trade beside the pier.
The Main Street section covers 3.5 acres. It holds Pebble Beach, the Main Street Playground, the Main Street Terrace and an entry plaza at Washington Street. The Environmental Education Center occupies 99 Plymouth, a former city facility.
Pier 6 holds Liberty Lawn, the picnic tables, the Flower Field and a playground. The lawns take a group of ten with a blanket each. Picnic tables look out on New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.
Sunday Evening: A Bookend Close
Traveling While Black: Black Women on Identity, Travel, Belonging and Finding Home runs at 6pm at Cafe con Libros, 724 Prospect Place in Crown Heights. Authors Ebony Walden and Chet'la Sebree appear with moderator Dr. Princess Francois. The listing prices the session at $5 optional.
Allow a separate transit leg back to Manhattan.

Book accommodation near Borough Hall or Clark Street, so the group sits inside the route. Anchor sessions need no booking. Eleven of the 69 Bookend events carry a ticket price, so reserve those places early. Cost sits in transit, food and any optional Bookend ticket.
