Walking the Cole Motor Campus Between Downtown Indianapolis and Holy Cross

Cole Motor restores two former jail buildings at 730 E. Washington St. and 752 E. Market St. into 213 apartments, 30,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a Market Street corridor that Catalyst describes as public space. City Market sits a 0.49-mile walk west of the campus.

Two Buildings, One Block Apart

Cole Motor occupies 730 E. Washington St. and 752 E. Market St. on the near east side of Indianapolis. IBJ recorded the two buildings at 180,000 square feet and 100,000 square feet on 19 March 2025. They went up between 1911 and 1922 for the Cole Motor Car Company, which dissolved in 1925.

The city took control of the property in 1996 and ran the jail and the arrestee processing center there until both moved to the Community Justice Campus in Twin Aire in 2022. The campus now holds 213 apartments and 30,000 square feet of commercial space. IBJ reported on 14 August 2026 that ten residents would move into the north building the following week, with the south building starting occupancy in November and the campus finished by the end of the year.

Market Street as the Route

Market Street runs between the two buildings. Catalyst describes the corridor as a public, community-oriented space focused on walkability, outdoor community spaces and public art. That corridor is the spine of a walking route through the site.

1820 Ventures describes the campus as a mixed-use anchor that reconnects downtown to the Near Eastside and knits back together the Cole Noble and Holy Cross neighborhoods.

The walk crosses restored frontage. Catalyst states that the facades undergo extensive restoration approved by the State Historic Preservation Office. IBJ reported 12-foot ceilings, oversized industrial windows and polished concrete flooring in some residences.

Walking From the Campus Into Downtown

These straight-line distances come from the campus position in OpenStreetMap, measured 23 September 2026: 790 m to City Market (0.49 mi), 1,020 m to Gainbridge Fieldhouse (0.63 mi), 1,170 m to Monument Circle (0.73 mi), 1,720 m to the Indiana Convention Center (1.07 mi) and 1,900 m to Lucas Oil Stadium (1.18 mi).

Market Street runs west through the Market East district. Washington Street runs west toward the Wholesale District and the convention campus.

Street-Level Retail and Dining

Catalyst expects a local childcare facility to take half of the 30,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. IBJ recorded 13,000 square feet of retail plus separate early childhood education space, with the first retail spaces available as early as 2026.

On 14 August 2026, IBJ reported that 1820 Ventures was close to announcing three retail leases. No tenant name, cuisine or opening date has been published for any of the ground-floor units.

The Wider Campus

1820 Ventures also controls Elevator Hill, the 13-acre redevelopment of the former Angie's List campus between downtown and Holy Cross. That district carries more than 175,000 square feet of office and retail buildings, more than $250 million of planned infill, and Gathyr Apartments, which opened in 2023.

Group Logistics With No Published Answer

The record carries no coach staging area, drop-off zone, group entry, tour schedule or group rate for the campus. IBJ lists a fitness center, a mezzanine yoga studio, a pet park, an outdoor alley courtyard and a rooftop entertainment terrace among the amenities. Access terms for visiting groups are not published.

IndyGo's Blue Line will run 24 miles from Indianapolis International Airport to the Town of Cumberland along I-70, Holt Road and Washington Street, on a schedule that opens the line for service in 2028. Catalyst describes the project as adjacent to a $370 million bus rapid transit route.
