Where the Walkable Spine Sits
Georgia Street runs east and west through the Wholesale District in downtown Indianapolis. The west block covers the stretch from South Capitol Avenue to South Illinois Street. Visit Indy describes the corridor as three blocks connecting the Indiana Convention Center to Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Indiana Convention Center sits at 100 South Capitol Avenue. The straight-line distances below come from OpenStreetMap coordinates with a haversine calculation. Read them as direct distance and add street routing. The Signia by Hilton Indianapolis at 101 West Georgia Street measures 334 metres, or 0.21 of a mile, from the convention center. The Omni Severin Hotel at 40 West Jackson Place measures 380 metres, or 0.24 of a mile. Le Méridien Indianapolis at 123 South Illinois Street measures 394 metres, or 0.24 of a mile. The Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown at Union Station, 123 West Louisiana Street, measures 308 metres, or 0.19 of a mile. Gainbridge Fieldhouse at 125 South Pennsylvania Street measures 728 metres, or 0.45 of a mile.
What Construction Closes
Visit Indy's construction page, last updated in July 2026, lists the closures that govern a walking route. Georgia Street between Capitol Avenue and Illinois Street is closed to vehicular traffic and to pedestrian traffic. Illinois Street is closed from South Street to Georgia Street. Capitol Avenue is closed from Ohio Street to South Street for through traffic through September 2026, with access to the Crowne Plaza available.
The same page records the removal of the skywalk between the Omni Severin Hotel and Circle Centre Mall during the fourth quarter of 2025 and describes that link as permanently closed.
Routing a Group on Foot
A group can cross downtown on Meridian Street or Pennsylvania Street and use the blocks outside the work zone to reach Gainbridge Fieldhouse from the hotel side of the district.
The skywalk network carries the rest. The Indiana Convention Center's attendee pages count 7,100 hotel rooms in downtown Indianapolis, 4,700 of them connected to the building by skywalk, and place more than half of downtown's rooms within blocks of the venue. Visit Indy counts 13 properties and 5,500 hotel rooms on the connected package once the Signia and the convention center expansion open.
The Work Window
Merritt Chase reported construction under way on the west block in a release dated 12 February 2025. The firm designed the street for the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development. WFYI reported on 26 March 2025 that the work was in full swing and put the project cost at $9.1 million.
Published completion dates for the park split by publisher. Merritt Chase's February 2025 release states that the new park environment will open in the spring of 2026. WFYI's March 2025 report states completion in the spring of 2026. Visit Indy's new-developments page lists the west block opening as October 2026. Its construction page schedules the full three-block redevelopment by fall 2026.
December 2026 belongs to the two buildings the west block fronts. Visit Indy lists the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis and the Indiana Convention Center expansion for December 2026 on the new-developments page and for the fourth quarter of 2026 on the construction page. That entry carries $710 million, a 143,500-square-foot expansion and an 803-room hotel.
A group itinerary for 2027 can plan on the west block joining the two open blocks. Dates inside 2026 need confirmation from the city before a coach or a walking group moves through the block.
What an Itinerary Still Needs
The published record carries no motorcoach staging position and no curbside load window for the corridor.
Downtown Indy runs an inquiry form for groups that want to hold an event on Georgia Street. Its corridor page lists the space as a downtown asset linking the convention center, Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil Stadium.
Three items belong on a request list before a 2027 walking itinerary goes to print. They are the confirmed opening date for the west block, the approved coach staging and drop-off allocation, and the street's event calendar for its first season.
