The Site and Its Address
Traction Yards occupies the two-city-block footprint of the former Circle Centre Mall at 49 West Maryland Street, Indianapolis. Hendricks Commercial Properties announced the name on December 12, 2025.
The published program lists approximately 400,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment, 100,000 square feet of office, more than 300 residential units, and public plazas and green space. The December 2025 release and Visit Indy give the first major phase a 2029 target. Visit Indy's construction updates page and the HVS market note of September 8, 2025 date the current phase, the southern end of the existing footprint, to 2030.
Tenants in the mall had to vacate by December 31, 2025. Visit Indy states that the food court closes during construction, that businesses on Meridian Street stay open, that businesses on Illinois Street have moved to temporary addresses, and that the parking garages are unaffected.
Where the Site Sits in the Grid
Straight-line distances from the 49 West Maryland Street address place every downtown asset inside three-quarters of a kilometre. The measurements come from OpenStreetMap, and a walking route runs longer than each figure.
The Indiana Convention Center at 100 South Capitol Avenue sits 450 metres away. Gainbridge Fieldhouse at 125 South Pennsylvania Street sits 380 metres away. Monument Circle sits 400 metres away. The Julia M. Carson Transit Center at 201 East Washington Street sits 540 metres away. Lucas Oil Stadium at 500 South Capitol Avenue sits 720 metres away.
Hotel neighbours sit inside 400 metres. Le Meridien stands 70 metres away on South Illinois Street. The Signia by Hilton tower at 101 West Georgia Street stands 170 metres away. The Omni Severin at 40 West Jackson Place stands 200 metres away. Embassy Suites at 110 West Washington Street stands 240 metres away. The Crowne Plaza in Union Station at 123 West Louisiana Street stands 320 metres away. The JW Marriott at 10 South West Street stands 780 metres away.
The Skywalk Spine
Visit Indy lists 12 hotels and 5,200 rooms connected by enclosed skywalks, and more than 10,000 rooms within walking distance of the convention center. The convention center reports 4,700 of downtown's 7,100 rooms on the skywalk system, and more than half of the downtown rooms within blocks of the building.
The rebuild changes part of that route. Visit Indy records the removal, during the fourth quarter of 2025, of the skywalk between the Omni Severin Hotel and Circle Centre Mall, and a temporary closure of the link between the mall and the World of Wonders Parking Garage. The garages stay open and street-level businesses along Meridian Street are unaffected.
A group routed through the skywalk network needs a status map for its travel dates. Ask the convention center for one.
A Group Day on Foot
One loop covers the district. Start at the Indiana Convention Center, walk north to Washington Street and turn east. The route reaches Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 380 metres from the site. Turn north-west to Maryland Street and the Traction Yards frontage, then north to Monument Circle, 400 metres from the site.
The straight-line length of that loop is about 1.5 kilometres. The convention center counts more than 200 downtown restaurants within walking distance of the building.
Georgia Street between Capitol Avenue and Illinois Street is closed to vehicles and pedestrians at the time of writing. Route the group by Washington Street, or use the skywalk system, until the corridor reopens.
Transit and the Transit Center
IndyGo's Red Line is the city's bus rapid transit route. It runs 13.1 miles and 28 stations, and it began service on September 1, 2019. The 2024 ridership figure of 1,402,365 is the combined Red Line and Purple Line count that IndyGo reports.
The Julia M. Carson Transit Center at 201 East Washington Street is the downtown hub, with 19 bus bays. It opened on June 26, 2016, and it sits 540 metres from the Traction Yards address by a straight line.
Construction the Group Will Meet
Visit Indy's construction updates page, with a map updated in March 2026, lists the closures that affect a downtown route. Capitol Avenue is closed from Ohio Street to South Street for through traffic into September 2026, with access to the Crowne Plaza available. Illinois Street is closed from South Street to Georgia Street. Georgia Street between Capitol Avenue and Illinois Street is closed to vehicles and to pedestrians.

What to Request Before the Itinerary Is Final
Ask the developer for the phase delivery schedule, the plaza programming calendar and the tenant mix. Ask the city for the approved load-zone allocation, the coach staging location and the pedestrian-management plan. Ask the convention center for a skywalk status map covering the group's dates. Ask the Artsgarden for its hold calendar. None of that is published today.
