Fountain Square sits a mile and a half southeast of downtown Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail connects the district to the city core, and Pacers Bikeshare kiosks sit inside the district. In 2026 the $14 million Fountain Square Area Drainage Improvements Project has taken parts of Shelby Street out of service, and a group moving through the district routes around live construction.
The window a 2026 itinerary sits inside
The city's project fact sheet for SD-32-014 publishes an anticipated construction window of Quarter 1, 2026 to Quarter 2, 2027. The same sheet puts the estimated construction cost at $14 million, names the neighbourhood as Fountain Square and lists the project status as Final Design.
The IBJ reported on 28 August 2026 that the Indianapolis Department of Public Works is targeting the end of the year for completion. The department holds that target. The fact sheet holds the later window.

Which Shelby Street segments carry traffic again
The district's own project log, updated 21 August 2026, records Shelby Street open to traffic between Sanders Street and Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive. Parking is not allowed on Shelby Street inside the project limits.
The same update records the intersection closures at Shelby Street and Morris Street and at Shelby Street and Prospect Street still in place. Prospect Street is closed at the Virginia and Shelby intersection, and a driver cannot reach Shelby Street from Prospect Street.
Woodlawn Street is restricted to local traffic between Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street from 24 August 2026. Crews paved Shelby Street through the Morris Street intersection and moved north toward the fountain. The log lists Cottage Avenue and Olive Street completed.
The Shelby Street bridge over Pleasant Run Creek closes separately for reconstruction, and the log records that work on schedule to reopen later this year.
Access for a coach or a group
The district's log publishes the closure map, the open segments and the restrictions. It publishes no turn-by-turn route for a coach, and the city publishes none either.
A group arriving by road uses the open stretch of Shelby Street between Sanders Street and Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive. Virginia Avenue traffic turns east or west on Prospect Street while the Woodlawn restriction runs.

Transit: the closed Red Line stations
IndyGo published the Red Line detour on 26 November 2025. Route 90 detours around the Fountain Square work, both the Pleasant Run and Raymond bus platforms close, and the Red Line shares Route 13 bus stops on Raymond Street. IndyGo posts signage to tell passengers where to board.
IndyGo's June 2026 service update records the Red Line split into north and south segments from the Julia M. Carson Transit Center, with the Fountain Square, Pleasant Run and Raymond stations closed on the south segment. The Red Line continues to serve Route 13 stops on East and Raymond streets, including stops at the Shelby and Raymond intersection, and selected south trips run on 40-foot buses.

Programming a district stop in 2026
The Fountain Square Theatre Building at 1105 Prospect Street holds the district's bookable inventory. Imbibe Bar and its game room open at 11 a.m. seven days a week. The Rooftop Garden opens at 6 p.m. daily and runs to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, weather permitting. Swing Night runs on the second and fourth Fridays, with a 7:30 p.m. lesson at $3 and an 8:30 p.m. band at $12. Atomic Bowl holds seven duckpin lanes, and a private rental takes the lanes and the cafe area with bowling shoes free.
The venue's own calendar carries dated Swing Night entries on 25 September, 9 October, 30 October, 13 November, 27 November and 18 December 2026. The 27 November entry runs under a no-swing notice.
Two annual events anchor a 2026 stop. The Chreece hip-hop festival brings crowds to eight Fountain Square venues on one Saturday. Epicurean Indy uses the intersection of Virginia and Woodlawn avenues. Residents also set up a DJ booth inside the construction zone around the Lady Spray fountain at Virginia Avenue, Prospect Street and Shelby Street.
Forward planning: the 24 weeks of 2027
For 24 weeks of 2027, segments of Virginia Avenue and Fletcher Avenue close between the Fletcher Place neighbourhood and Fountain Square while bridges are redecked above Interstate 65 and Interstate 70. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail stays open to pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists, and the Fletcher Avenue bridge closes for 12 weeks of that period.
INDOT combined the two bridges after resident feedback. "People want the construction to get over with quicker," said Jordan Yaney, public relations director for INDOT's East Central District. Yaney also said INDOT identifies a project about five years before construction starts.
