Where the Campus Sits
Indiana University Health is building its new downtown hospital on 44 acres between 12th and 16th streets, from Capitol Avenue to Interstate 65, per Inside INdiana Business. The main entrance sits off Senate Avenue, just south of West 16th Street, per the same report. The campus holds three 16-story towers with 864 private inpatient rooms, 50 operating rooms and 380 outpatient exam rooms. IU Health's project page lists 110 care spaces in the emergency department and answers its own opening question with December 2027.
Four buildings join the hospital. The Medical Office Building is a five-story mixed-use building for offices, clinical space and retail. The South Support Building carries material management, loading docks and the primary parking area, with 2,600 parking spaces and room for 22 semi-trailers, per Inside INdiana Business. A central utility plant serves the site, and a medical education and research building serves IU School of Medicine.
The Campus Against the Downtown Hotel Blocks
Downtown Indianapolis concentrates its hotel rooms in the Wholesale District, on the corridor that runs from the Statehouse to the convention center. Straight-line measures from the mapped IU Health construction feature on the campus (OpenStreetMap 39.78745, -86.16214) put the Hyatt Regency at 2.34 km, the Westin at 2.34 km, the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown at 2.35 km and the JW Marriott at 2.37 km. The Indiana Convention Center measures 2.65 km. The Signia by Hilton Indianapolis measures 2.66 km. Those figures are straight-line measures, and the coordinate source is OpenStreetMap.
Room inventory along that corridor is published. Visit Indy's connected hotels page lists 12 hotels and 5,200 rooms connected to the convention center by skywalk, and it states that the downtown pipeline takes the count of rooms within walking distance of the center past 10,000. The convention center's facility guide counts 4,721 connecting hotel rooms, 7,175 rooms within a six-block radius and 4,570 committable group rooms downtown.
Transit on the Corridor
The IndyGo Red Line runs the length of Capitol Avenue through downtown. It is Route 90, a bus rapid transit line of 13.1 miles and 28 stations with level boarding, dedicated bus lanes and doors on both sides, and it began service on 1 September 2019. Ridership reached 1,402,365 in 2024.
Two Red Line stations serve the campus corridor. The station listing pairs the 18th Street stop with IU Health Methodist Hospital, and the route map carries a 14th Street and Capitol Avenue stop.
Local and regional buses meet downtown at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center, 201 East Washington Street, which opened on 26 June 2016 with 19 bus stands. IU Health states that the campus is designed for community connectivity with IndyGo bus stops, and that the South Support Building will include bicycle and electric charging stations.
Routing a Group Through Construction
IU Health publishes a two-week look ahead of construction activity, road impacts and walkway impacts on its construction updates page. Read that page in the week before a visit, before a coach route or a walking route is fixed.

Visitor parking sits in the attached garages at the hospital, the Medical Office Building and the Neuroscience Center, per IU Health's own project questions, and the South Support Building carries the main parking area. No publisher lists a coach staging area, a curbside load zone or a drop-off window for the campus.
What to Ask Before Booking
Ask the downtown hotels for medical and academic rates, and ask whether the connected properties will hold blocks for a clinic week or a research programme. Ask the health system for the average length of stay by service line and for annual outpatient volumes. Those numbers size a package.
Route the group through downtown on the Red Line where the itinerary allows. The line runs from the 18th Street stop beside IU Health Methodist to the Statehouse stop at Court and Capitol, and the Carson Transit Center carries the local and regional transfers.
